Volunteering in the Reference Department

Library Docent
Position Summary/Description
Volunteer docents assist library patrons in locating books and other materials in the library. The docent is stationed at a table in the main Reading Room and the station may circulate in the stacks on the second and third floors.

Requirements:
1 year commitment of 2-4 hours per week.
Demonstrable knowledge of searching the card catalog for an author or title and locating an item in the library by Dewey Decimal number.
10 hours of training by a staff member.

Booktalk Volunteer
Position Summary/Description
Volunteer gives 3-5 minute booktalks on 5 books once a month at local senior facility.

Requirements:
1 year commitment of once a month booktalk (1 1/2 hour).
Voracious reader able to talk about books in different genres. (frequently LT books and 60 books/per year).
Ease in talking to groups of seniors.

Volunteering with Technical Services

Position Summary/Description
This position assists with covering books.  Manual dexterity and precision are appreciated.

Special Requests:
Afternoons are preferred.
Please call to discuss a schedule to allow the department to properly prepare materials.
No heavy lifting.
Quiet, pleasant work environment.

Volunteering in the Children’s Department

Position Summary/Description
This position assists in preparing for storytimes and crafts; shelving books and other items; keeping the Library in good order; and other tasks as assigned.

Special Requests:
Volunteers interested in helping for one-time events like our New Year’s Eve party.
Teen volunteers interested in helping in the evenings from 5:00 - 8:00 pm.
Volunteers interested in shelving during the day.
Teens volunteers should fill out the Teen Volunteer Application.

Age Range
All 12-18 year olds.
Adults on approval of the Children’s Department Head, Christine Erickson.

Volunteering in Local History and Special Collections Department

Position Summary/Description
The volunteer opportunities in local history are varied with respect to tasks, and skills required to perform them. Most require a degree of training by our staff and usually a long term commitment. An example is collections processing.
