Reading Buddies

Bangor Public Library invites you to become a Reading Buddy.  This is a new program designed for students in sixth grade or younger.  This program pairs a student with an adult volunteer.  It is a one-on-one experience.  The adult will read to the student at an agreed upon time in the Library once a week.

Reading Buddies

Reading aloud to children over the age of 4 provides many wonderful opportunities for both an adult and a student. It affords an opportunity to discuss topics that might not otherwise come up. It models the behavior of reading and delivers the message that reading is an important activity. It expands the literature available to children and can be a source of new vocabulary and concepts. It is also a shared experience which can build trust.

Reading Buddies is a new program of the Bangor Public Library offered through a gift from the Katahdin Trust Company. The program targets students ages 4 to 14 and is designed to encourage students to find pleasure in books and reading. Volunteers from the community will be matched with an interested student. They will meet at the Library for at least a half an hour a week. The volunteer will read to the student—a novel, a short story, an essay, something of the volunteer’s choosing. As time goes on, the adult may have the student read aloud to him or her. If time permits, the volunteer may assist the student with homework or research an interesting topic, read the newspaper, or listen together to an audio book at the library, any activity that encourages the young participant to enjoy reading and learning new ideas.

If you are interested in being a part of the program, please complete the following application and return it to the Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St, Bangor, ME 04401.
