If you listen to rap or hip-hop music, or watch a music
video, what some of the messages seem to be selling is
an acceptance of violence towards women, homophobia, and
an expectation of violence as a prevailing norm in one’s
life. With rap and hip-hop dominating the music airwaves
and iTunes downloads, the idea of the life of a thug or
gangsta is becoming the accepted model of manhood. The
film Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes, presented by the
Rape Response Services, a Penquis subsidiary, takes an
in-depth look at manhood in rap music and culture, at
the Bangor Public Library, Wednesday, April 27 at 5:30
PM.
Hip-Hop is a documentary that challenges the
representations of masculinity in rap music culture from
the point of view of a fan. Directed by Byron Hunt a
life-long fan of hip-hop music, Hip-Hop has been aired
on the Emmy Award winning PBS series, Independent Lens.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and the
documentary will be accompanied by a book display in the
Bangor Public Library’ main lobby. Please note that this
documentary features explicit language and images found
in pop culture. This is a free event and the public is
invited to watch the film and take part in a discussion
afterwards. Bangor Public Library is a founding member
of Bangor Arts, a collaboration inviting the public to
discover and enjoy the excitement of Bangor’s world of
art and culture.
