Bangor Reads
To Kill a Mockingbird

Back in the spring of 1999, Bangor Library
patrons voted on what they thought was the
best book ever written. The favorite, by
far, was Harper Lee's
To
Kill a Mockingbird. What then, could
be a better choice for the 2011 Bangor
Reads? Things will be done a bit
differently this year. Instead of all the
Bangor Reads activities being confined to
one month, the programs related to
To
Kill a Mockingbird will be scheduled
throughout the first three months of 2011.
The kickoff for Bangor Reads will take place
on Wednesday, January 5, 12:30-2 PM, and
will feature a Southern dinner and a
presentation by Judge Andrew Mead, "Justice
in Today's World. Look for Bangor Reads
program schedules at the Library in January!

Hope Reading and Discussion Group
The Bangor Public Library has a new
neighbor! The Peace and Justice Center is
moving to 96 Harlow St.
Peace and Justice members and the Bangor
Public Library will be sponsoring a Hope
Reading and Discussion Group. They will be
considering and discussing the writings of
some of the most eloquent voices of our
time... Nelson Mandela, Maya Angelou,
Arundhati Roy, and Desmond Tutu to mention a
few. Be watching for further information.

WHAT'S NEW
IN THE BANGOR ROOM AND
SPECIAL
COLLECTIONS
ON DISPLAY
In December, an exhibit of
items from the Library's Bangor Jewish
Community Collection is in the Staircase
Landing and the Rotunda Showcases. One of
the highlights is the record book from
Ahawas Achim, one of the earliest Jewish
congregations in the state.
In January, in conjunction
with 2011 Bangor Reads, the cases will be
displaying items from the Library's
outstanding Afro-American collection.
In March, The Library joins
in commemorating the 100th Anniversary of
the Great Bangor Fire of 1911. displaying
amazing images of the blaze and its
aftermath. Items on display come from the
Library's collection.
Take an Art Tour!
The Library will be
providing new Art Guides to assist anyone
who wishes to take a self-guided tour of the
Library's art collection. But that's not
all! Images of the Library's art collection
are being put in digital form, which means
soon you will be able to have a close up
view of our art online. All this is possible
through the work of award-winning Brewer
photographer, Joel Holcomb, who has been
photographing the Library's art collection
(over 180 treasures). But that's not all!
Take a Virtual Tour!
You will soon be able to visit all of the
public areas of the Bangor Public Library
via your computer. This guide to the
Library was made possible by Mr. Holcomb,
who captured every nook and cranny in our
wonderful building. If you want a sneak
peak at the work Mr. Holcomb has done go to

In
2011, Bill Cook will again be working with

Do
have a look at what these young historians
accomplished this year. Bangor High School,
the Bangor Public Library, the Bangor Museum
and History Center and the Doughty and Cohen
Middle Schools collaborated to research and
write about a number of compelling topics,
weaving them into a narrative, illustrated
history entitled "Bangor: Tidal River City."
Subjects include the Bangor Fire of 1911,
The Brady Gang, Early Railroads and a view
of the area during the Civil War and World
War II.
Next year,
the projects proposed are exhibits on the
region's role in the Civil War and World War
II.

LAST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, THE LIBRARY'S
UNRIVALED COLLECTION OF HISTORIC POSTERS
FROM WWI AND WWII IS BEING DIGITALLY
COPIED.
The project
is a collaboration of the Bangor Public
Library and the University of Maine's Fogler
Library. Digitilization of the collection
is being funded by Eugene and Barbara
Daigle, with the Library providing the
workspace and cataloguing. James Daigle
Photography of Bangor will be producing
about 3000 original images of the
collection, with 4 sizes of each poster made
available. Fogler Library will serve as the
web host of the digital collection and
provide design and archival services.

TREASURES ON DISPLAY IN THE LOBBY'S LOBBY IN

Bangor Public Library one of Jackson
Lab's Choices for a "Passport to Health"

In an effort to help their nearly 1,300
employees and their families improve their
health- physically, mentally and
financially- Jackson Laboratory is engaging
community businesses and organizations in
the "Passport to Better Health." The
program not only encourages employees and
dependents to take part in traditional
wellness activities, but to take steps
beyond that and engage in desirable
behaviors that positively contribute to
their overall health and wellbeing. It is
suggested that one may well have fun in the
process!
