JUNE EVENTS and SUMMER READING IN THE
CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT
A Planting Party -
Tuesday, June 1st, 4 PM
Children
are invited to help the Bangor Garden Club plant the
flowerpots on the Children's Dept. terrace. A brief
demonstration on what makes a pleasing display, as
well as information and hands on experience on how
to successfully plant flowers, will be followed by a
snack.
Green Eggs and Tony
- Thursday, June 3rd, 4 PM
The dark emerald green egg of the emu is as
large as twelve chicken eggs and is the next to the
largest egg known to man. Only the ostrich egg is
larger. Tony Sohns, our favorite science guy, will
talk about the emu and its egg, read a favorite Dr.
Seuss story with egg in the title (can you guess?),
and prepare and serve up a fresh emu egg omelet to
sample.
Doll's Day Tea Party
- Saturday, June 5th, 10 AM
Young ladies and gentlemen are invited
to the perennial favorite, the Doll's Day Tea
Party. Bring your favorite doll or stuffed animal
along to introduce to other tea-goers, and to be in
the parade. Bow ties, lots of jewelry and gloves
are often worn. A special guest will be Althea
Unertl, a creative 15-year-old doll maker who began
making dolls when she was two! Everyone is invited
to come have a tea-rific time!
Donn Fendler for
Kids - Saturday, June 12, 10 AM
In 1939, millions were caught up in the drama
of a twelve year old Boy Scout lost on Mt. Katahdin
for nine days. Donn Fendler's survival adventure
continues to amaze young and old. He is one of our
state's favorite heroes and he will share his story
of courage and hope. Mr. Fendler will be doing a
program for adults this day at 1 PM. His book,
Donn
Fendler: Lost on a Mountain in Maine, will be
available for purchase and signing.
String Magic -
Saturday, June 12, 3 PM
Got string? We have some just for you! And we
want to teach you how to make some fun string
figures and tricks. When you see them, you'll want
to make them. Lynn McCarthy is a school librarian
in Portland who tells stories with string. She will
provide the inspiration, materials, resources to
get you started. Directions exist for making more
than 2,000 string figures. She'll start you on your
way to becoming an expert!
Monday, June 21 -

Bangor History Room Leads the Way in the
Maine Community Heritage Project
Students at the William S. Cohen school had
history come alive thanks to a grant from
MCHP, and
projects devised and implemented by Bill
Cook, the Bangor Public Library's
historian. Cook was part of Bangor's
Project Team, which included Bangor High
School, the Bangor Public Library, Bangor
Museum and History Center and the Doughty
and Cohen Middle Schools. A wide variety of
topics was chosen with the compelling
history of the state's third largest city in
mind. Pulled together by a narrative history
titled "Bangor: Tidal River City," their
topics include the Fire of 1911, the Brady
Gang Incident, the Civil War, Early
Railroads, and the 1940s. The students saw
and photographed 1930s "Brady Gang" era
clothing and artifacts and WWII material and
uniforms. They also experienced eyewitness
guests who were brought in to describe their
experiences and answer students' questions.
The students also analyzed, identified and
scanned old images and documents, preserving
these invaluable primary source materials
for future generations. The web page
resulting from the students work will be
available to all starting in June. Go to
Maine Memory Network http://www.mainememory.net/
and click on Maine Community Heritage
Project. Then click on Bangor, and enjoy
such items as President Grant's visit to
Bangor in 1871, early area railroad history,
eyewitness accounts of the Brady Gang, and
stories of early Bangor High sports.

Donn Fendler Day
Meet the author of
Lost on a Mountain in Maine
On Saturday, June 12, Donn Fendler,
whose ordeal as a 12-old-boy captured
the hearts of the nation in 1939, will
make two presentations at the
Library...one at 10 am for children, and
one at 1 pm for adults.
Many older folks remember the story
of this New York boy scout lost in the
Maine wilderness alone for 9 days. But
successive generations have also learned
of and been inspired by Mr. Fendler's
courage and determination. The last time
he visited the library, so many people
wanted to meet him and hear his story,
that it was difficult to fit them into
one room. Therefore, Mr. Fendler will
be doing two presentations.
His book,
Lost on a Mountain in Maine will
be available for purchase and signing at
both the 10 am and the 1 pm
presentations.

LOOKING
FOR SOMETHING?
The Library is pleased to announce
two new services designed to make it
easier for you to find your book,
magazine, or dvd, or to get the
general information you need!
-Perhaps you've noticed that there's
a new desk in the Library's lobby as
you come in the main entrance. A
reference librarian will frequently
be posted there to answer your
questions as you come in the door.
-Also, volunteer docents will now be
available to help you find what you
need. We realize, with a collection
our size (more than 1/2 a million
books!), it's not always easy to
find things. An available docent
may be found in the Reading Room at
the entrance to the 2nd Floor
stacks. In the meantime, you are
welcome to ask any of the staff for
advice, assistance or directions.

THERE WILL
ALSO BE A
WHOLE NEW
SLATE OF AUTHORS COMING TO THE
LIBRARY
IN SEPTEMBER, SO COME AND
