2010 Summer Reading Program Guide
Help win a private
party for everyone in your school!
The school with the highest participation rate
will win an after-hours party at the Library on
September 25, 2010.
"Ahoy, readers! Make a Splash-Read!" is the
theme this summer at the Bangor Public Library.
Explore the world of water and water fun with
special guests, crafts, stories, songs, games
and other activities about oceans, rivers, lakes
and pools and the creatures that live there. The
2010 Summer Reading Program is open to young
people, preschool through fifth grade. Each day
there is a different event and all events are
free. Children may sign up as a reader or
listener, or both. Registration begins on June
21st . We guarantee an ocean of fun!
Sign up for the summer reading program and you
will receive a complimentary ticket to a Sea
Dogs game, an invitation to a Parks and Rec/Library
pool party, a pass for free bowling at Family
Fun Bowling Center and a free skate session at
Great Skates.
And TD Bank offers to deposit $10 into the new
or existing Young Saver account of everyone who
reads 10 books over the summer. Come into the
Library to pick up your form and more
information.
MAKE A SPLASH!
When you complete your contract, receive a free
ice cream cone from What's the Scoop and be
entered in a drawing for:
1. A North Country Rivers rafting trip on
the Kennebec River for a child and adult
2. A Downeast Windjammer Cruise on the
Margaret Todd for a child and adult
3. Fall Program Family Pass from Field's
Pond Audubon Center
4. A day pass for a child and adult to
Peaks-Kenny State Park
5. A day pass to Funtown/Splashtown USA in
Saco
6. A free seasons' pass to the Brewer City
Pool
7. Swim passes for a child and adult to the
Husson Pool

TD Bank will again open a savings account and
put ten dollars into it for any child who reads
or listens to ten books.

SUMMER READING CALENDAR!
MONDAY, JUNE 21~ An Ocean Adventure~
Glub, glub, glub, we're going down, down,
down into the deep blue sea to see what we
can see! Phil Averill, the Ocean Guy, will
offer two programs. The first, at 10AM, for
children through six years old, the second
at 11AM, for ages 7-12. A fun, informative,
hands-on program about Maine's ocean and
fishing heritage seems a perfect beginning
for Make a Splash!
TUESDAY, JUNE 22, 10AM ~ Wet Weather~
Channel 5 meteorologist, Chris Ewing, will
step away from the camera and into the Story
Room to give a lively explanation of water
at work in our weather cycle.
WEDNESDAY,
JUNE 23~
9:15AM, Mother Goose Babies
(up to 24 months) are invited to participate
with a parent in this 20-minute program
filled with stories, songs and finger plays
each Wednesday morning. Promptness is
essential with such a short program. Clap,
clap, clap, let's make noise!

KNEISEL HALL
CONCERT FOR CHILDREN Kneisel Hall Young
People's Concert Talented young musicians
from the world famous Blue Hill music camp
will introduce children to a few classic
composers and guide them in listening to the
tempo, mood and interaction of the music and
instruments. Always a treat, this young
people's concert will be held in the Story
Room.
THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 10AM~ Meet
Author Dee Perry!~ In Ms. Perry's story,
based on actual events, learn how a humpback
whale, discovered off the coast of Maine, is
brought to the mainland and its bones
eventually reconstructed for a museum
display. Writer/illustrator Dee Perry
follows this two year process and brings it
all to life with a boy and his dad as the
main characters in A Whale in My Backyard.
FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 10 AM~ SpongeBob
SquarePants Party~ Who lives in a pineapple
under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants, of
course! Join SpongeBob and his lovable cast
of underwater characters for a celebration
of all things SpongeBob. The fun will
include crafts and games, treats and oceans
of silliness.
MONDAY, JUNE 28, 10AM~ Water Crafts~
Join Jody and Anne on the Children's Terrace
(in the Story Room if it should rain) for
crafts with water as the major element of
the fun.
TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 10AM~ A Penobscot
Marine Adventure~ Staff from the Penobscot
Marine Museum will lead an interactive
session exploring the history of the
Penobscot, how it connects with Penobscot
Bay, the ocean, and the world.

THURSDAY, JULY 1, 10AM~
Jell-O Desserts~ There is always room for
America's favorite gelatin dessert! Join
Shane as he creates patriotic-themed Jell-O
desserts that will not only stand up to the
heat of July but also make a great addition
to your holiday celebration. Bring your
favorite small cookie cutter to help make
Jell-O jigglers.
FRIDAY, JULY 2, 10AM~ Red, White and
Blue Day Our annual, early celebration of
our nation's birthday will be made special
with flag-raising, a review of our nation's
symbols, a parade to City Hall, ice cream
from Schwan's and a patriotic craft.
TUESDAY, JULY 6, 10AM~ Water Bug
Safari~ Our favorite science guy, Tony Sohns,
is sure to delight with his collection of
water bugs and fascinating facts about their
lives under, on and over the water.

THURSDAY, JULY 8, 10AM~ Once Upon a
Tide~ Jackson Gilman is known as The
Stand-Up Chameleon. Watch him change from
serious to silly, singer to dancer. His
zany and whimsical performances, a mix of
comedy, music, dance and other arts are sure
to please.
FRIDAY, JULY 9, 10AM~Wonderful Water~
Bangor teacher Debbie Sykes will lead a
lively exploration of the properties of
water and the forms we use it in.
MONDAY, JULY 12,
10AM Water Crafts
2pm The Two Bite Club~ For three
consecutive Monday afternoons, Gail Lane of
the Penobscot County Co-operative Extension
will offer stories, crafts and healthy
snacks for pre-schoolers. Each week's
activities develop a different deliciously
nutritious theme and encourage healthy food
choices. Yum!
TUESDAY, JULY 13, 10AM~ Under an MDI
Biological Lab Microscope~ Did you know that
when you swim in a pond or ocean, you are
not swimming alone? All sorts of
microscopic organisms are swimming along
with you. A Mount Desert Island Biological
Lab staff member will bring microscopes for
us to view those little creatures and learn
about their watery existence.

THURSDAY, JULY 15, 10AM~
Lobstering with Dad: A Labor of Love~ Susan
Palmer, who's father is a lobsterman, will
talk about growing up with a lobstering dad
and how he turned a hobby into a lifelong
passion. Susan is a teacher in Glenburn and
she will share her experiences with our
favorite crustacean.
FRIDAY, JULY 16, 10AM~ Water Under
the Bridge~ Children from the ages of 8
to12 are invited to learn about the exciting
hobby of genealogy from members of the
Penobscot County Genealogical Society.
Learn about the basic tools used to trace
family history, use the library's microfilm
to gather information, explore the Bangor
Room and find great granddaddy's obituary-in
other words, have a blast tracking down your
ancestors!

TUESDAY, JULY 20, 10AM~ A Visit to
Our Watershed: Flood's Pond~ Flood's Pond
in Otis provides water to Bangor residents.
One yellow bus (thanks to Cyr Bus!) filled
with summer readers and their parents will
trek to Otis for a grand tour of the natural
reservoir, pump station and water treatment
facility. *Parents need to register along
with their children for the two to three
hour excursion at the Children's Desk or
call 947-8337, ext 111. If the bus should
fill up, meet us there and join the tour.
Ask for directions at the Children's Desk.

Visit to the Thomas Hill Standpipe~ A Visit
to the Thomas Hill Standpipe Bangor's most
visible landmark since 1897, the Thomas Hill
Standpipe maintains water pressure for the
city. A member of the staff of the Bangor
Water District will give us a guided tour,
leading us up the staircase to view the
panorama of the Queen City and, if clear, Mt
Katahdin in the distance. Meet at the
library at 11 AM to walk to the Standpipe or
meet us there at 11:30 for the tour.
THURSDAY, JULY 22, 10AM~ Wetland
Metaphors~ Muddy, damp and squishy are words
that describe bogs, marshes or
swamps-wetlands. Lisa Kane, Natural
Educator for the Maine Department of Inland
Fisheries and Wildlife, will lead us in
exploring wetlands and use familiar objects
to help participants draw parallels between
their experience and that of the creatures
and plants that are found there.
FRIDAY, JULY 23, 10AM~ Introduction
to Watercolors~ Two local art teachers,
members of the Bangor Art Society, will
familiarize participants with the basics of
watercolor art and then guide them in trying
the technique. All materials will be
provided for this two-hour program and a
snack too. Register at the Children's Desk,

TUESDAY, JULY 27, 10 AM~ Cleaning the
Penobscot~ Wendy Warren is at the helm of
Bangor's efforts to clean the river that is
our city's eastern boundary. She will talk
to us about what went into the Penobscot,
why it needs to come out, how the waste is
being removed and what we can do to make a
difference in the future of the river.

solo or combo, with a watery theme

Party~ When you register for the summer
reading program, you will receive a free
pass for you and a parent to the 10 AM to
noon, July 30th party hosted by Bangor Parks
and Rec and the Library. The lifeguards
will offer a brief water safety review and
then we'll all get to enjoy the slides and
pool, make a splash!

the Navy Now!~ A local recruiter will
introduce the water-borne branch of our
armed services, it's history, how it keeps
us safe, and how it differs from the other

Dancing~ Leave your umbrellas at home!
Caller Nancy Rosalie will be guiding us in
line and square dancing accompanied by a
fiddler. Will our feet call down rain or
bring out the sun? Who cares, we will have
fun!
FRIDAY, AUGUST 6 10AM~ Finale! Water
Games and Picnic with Dunk Tank~ Fix a lunch
basket and wrap up the library waterthon
with wet relays, wet rumpus and wet games
and a picnic (hopefully dry!). Who is that
waterlogged librarian and how many dunks can
you deliver? We'll all have fun if you come
too.

Each week we will have a game for you to do
at the Library.
It may be a maze, a guessing game or a word
search.
When you finish the game be sure to have
your name and phone # on your paper, we will
draw a name from the correct entries
and award a prize.
